In this
blog post I will be assessing the hit TLC show, Cheer Perfection. Cheer
Perfection first aired in 2012. This show follows a cheerleading team from
Cheer Time Revolution, located in Sherwood, Arkansas, as they take on the
amazing world of competitive cheer. As I said this show takes place in the
CTR (Cheer Time Revolution) gym, where head coach Alisha Dunlap coaches the
team Youth Silver. Youth Silver is a level 2 team, and one of the best teams at
every competition they go to. Even though this show isn't the best show that
has hit television, it show the struggles of every cheerleading team. Brian
Lowry of Variety said "the show isn't original". Verne Gay of Newsday
said "the show dull, trivial and never, ever outrageous". And Melissa
Camacho of Common Sense Media gave the show 2 stars out of 5. Cheer Perfection
shows the ups and downs of being on a national known cheerleading team. From
the judgment they get at competitions to not being dead center in the routine,
you see most everything that happens in the CTR gym. If you have ever seen
previews for Cheer Perfection you have probably heard the famous line from
Coach Alisha Dunlap to her daughter Cambree, “If you fall again I’m going to
replace you”. Some say that Alisha’s style of coaching is too hard on the
girls, ages ranging from 6-14. When asked if she thought she was too hard on
her cheerleaders she replied with “These kids know me so
well. It doesn’t even bother them… I think they like to get me excited.
They know I care.”
Along with Alisha’s passion
for cheerleading, are the passions of the other mothers at CTR. However
sometimes these passions turns into competitiveness amongst the mothers. Many
of the mothers at CTR such as Bonnie Crow, Ann Robinson, and Andrea Clevenger
feel very strongly about what it takes to win. Ann Robinson said about her
daughter; “Torin played softball this year. And everybody got a
trophy. Well, that’s not fun to me. I want to know that my kid is
number one,” This type of attitude is very common among the mothers at Cheer
Time Revolution. Sometimes this competitiveness and pressure to be number one
builds up to the point where on the show there are constant cat fights. This
“mama drama” is really what the show is all about! Sure there is cheerleading
involved in the show, but the majority is the fighting among the cheer moms. If
the show was solely about competitive cheerleading I would like the show a lot
more. I will every once in a while update you on Cheer Perfection and give more
reviews on what I like and dislike about the show, but until next time keep on
cheering.
